Late Earth Day Post -- The Evil of GMOs

Here's a video I found recently, it's pretty long but I think what it says is important:

The Future of Food One comment that struck me was that Bt corn is itself classified as a pesticide. Would anyone want to knowingly ingest a pesticide? I DON'T THINK SO! And yet we do it all the time in the processed foods we eat, many of which contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Interesting article, but very scary IMO:

GM Soy linked to Sterility No more babies within three generations? Have you ever seen the movie Children of Men? If Monsanto gets their way that could be our future.

I don't have the link handy but I read another article recently that said there were tests done on fields in India that had grown GMO crops; the results showed that after three years of growing GMO crops the fields had lower than normal amounts of microorganims, the rate was 12-30% depending on what organisms were measured. The crops were killing the soil.

My take on this? GMOs are poison and should be banned. I found a printable guide online at http://nongmoshoppingguide.com that people can use to avoid companies that use these toxic products. There's also more info at www.centerforfoodsafety.org and www.healthiereating.org. Also if you garden you can get your seeds from sources that don't sell GMO seed, some good companies I've heard of are Johnny's Selected Seeds, Baker Creek, and Home Town Seeds.

Based on the first two links it looks to me like Monsanto and companies like them only want to beef up their profits and they don't care who they hurt. Let's show them that's the wrong way to go.

(Some of my recent posts have been downers, I know...I've got some creative stuff going on too, just have to get some pics done and I'll be posting them too. I'm turning 40 in a couple weeks, maybe that's where this "let's do something to save the world" impulse is coming from.)

I only buy heirloom seeds when I plant in my garden myself. I understand what some folks feel - GMOs make for cheaper foods - but I cannot help but feel that it's contributing to the higher rate of diseases.

I try and grow as much of my own vegetables as I can and I also raise my own chickens and ducks for eggs and meat. We watched the PBS special recently called Food. and it really shocked hubby even though I keep trying to tell him all about the issues with GMO foods. He's really wised up after watching that PBS special.

I don't understand the point of GMOs. Why mess with nature?

Thanks, Ruth, for your caring comment.

I can't comment on the content of the case, but you're right. :)
I'm stressed to bits at the moment, and I need to get on top of it. It's soo hot and humid here and that doesn't help. I was in the middle of changing winter- and summerclothes and the whole lot needs to go to the attick. It's terribly hot there. It's impossible to stay there longer than a few minutes.
So it's like the whole house is a complete mess. It's not, but it feels like it. And I think they judge a family on that too.

I know I'm a good mom and I haven't harmed my children at all.
But it's what they want to think, not about how it is.
They take children from homes just on hear-say and that's what really bugs me. They're all special to me. Well, that goes for any mom.

They're also going around asking people, like the mentor at school. She said we didn't show up at the parent's meetings. We did!!! All of them.

It's such a great support that my online friends belief in me.
I know that eventually the truth shall be most important, all I can hope is that those who come to investigate our family are able to see the truth.

Please destroy this comment. One never knows.

Thanks for being such a dear friend.

Ruth, Great post and interesting about Monsanto and other co.s that are messing around with our seeds, plants, giving hormones to our cattle, and meat sources. It is about time that we US (maybe govt. or maybe NOT) put our foot down and get away from all of these fake and harmful pesticides, and growth hormones ect that we are ingesting. Glad you are bringing out to everyone's attention. JJ

Hi back. :-) I do have a new post written, just have to get it put up--most likely tomorrow (Tuesday). Been having some family issues that have been taking up too much of my time and attention the last couple months.
